Carnegie UK welcomes eight new members to its Board of Trustees

We are pleased to welcome eight new trustees to the Carnegie UK board.

Joining us in June 2024 are Rachel Doyle, Mohammad Jamei, Claire McColgan CBE, Dr Laura Zahra McDonald, Professor Duncan Morrow and Dr Ruth Strain.

Joining us in summer 2025 are Trewin Restorick and Andrea Westall.

Rachel Doyle

Joining us in June 2024

Rachel is the owner and director of Home Instead, a home care company based in Fife. As a champion of person-centred care, she strives each day to improve the lives of others. Rachel has more than 30 years’ experience working in both the public and private sector. After graduating from Leeds University in 1992, Rachel worked in the footwear industry, often travelling to factories around the world. In 1998, she joined the Health and Safety Executive as a trainee HM Inspector. In 2015, she took on the role of Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing at Strathclyde University and, with the University’s support, gained an MBA with distinction in 2022. Rachel is a Trustee of the Carnegie Dunfermline and Hero Fund Trust.


Mohammad Jamei

Joining us in June 2024

Mohammad is the Director of Economic Policy at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), with over a decade of experience as a public policy economist. He leads the CBI’s work on tax, regulations, and economic policy development in the UK. Before this, Mohammad set up CBI Economics, a consultancy primarily focused on bridging the gap between businesses and government on economic policy analysis and impact assessments. From 2018 – 2021, Mohammad was an economic consultant at PwC, where he led projects to implement economic and fiscal policies in countries across the Middle East and Central Asia. Mohammad’s career began at HM Treasury as a government economist, where he honed his expertise in shaping UK policies, and he later worked as a Senior Economist at UK Finance.


Claire McColgan CBE

Joining us in June 2024

Claire is a public servant and creative entrepreneur recognised for her work in leading Liverpool’s cultural and visitor economy offer. Over her 25-year career, she has received awards such as the Innovation in Business Award and Woman of the Year Award. Claire is an expert in culturally led regeneration, supporting cities across the country and world. Most recently, she delivered Eurovision in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine. Claire also serves as a non-executive board member for Visit Isle of Man and is deputy chair for the UK City of Culture Competition 2025.


Dr Laura Zahra McDonald 

Joining us in June 2024

Laura is a founding director of ConnectFutures and a passionate advocate of whole community approaches to social challenges. Her academic background combined with practitioner experience is rooted in harnessing research to inform best practice, using collaborative, asset-based methods. Her research and policy work is explicitly intersectional, bringing out contexts and impacts of race, gender and social exclusions to the fore. Laura is an experienced researcher and evaluator, specialising in engaging participants from underserved backgrounds, communicating her findings with a wide range of audiences including government, corporate, third sector and community organisations. She holds an Honorary Research Fellowship at the Department of Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology, University of Liverpool.


Professor Duncan Morrow

Joining us in June 2024

Duncan Morrow is Professor in Politics at Ulster University where he is currently also Director of Community Engagement. Having established a ground-breaking project on conflict transformation in the 1990s, Duncan was appointed as a Sentence Review Commissioner in 1998 responsible for implementing the early release provisions of the Good Friday Agreement. For ten years, Duncan was Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council where he championed practice and policy for a shared future in Northern Ireland. Over five years he chaired Ministerial advisory groups on Sectarianism and on Hate Crime, Prejudice and Community Cohesion for the Scottish Government and has been a member of the Church of England’s Racial Justice Commission since 2021.


Trewin Restorick

Joining us in 2025

Trewin is known for being the Founder of Hubbub UK which transforms the way environmental messages are communicated by uniting people and organisations as a force for good. Hubbub has twice won Charity of the Year and Trewin was recognised with a Global Leader of the Year award. In 2021, he won the Business Green ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and in 2022 voted by peers as the most influential person in the UK’s recycling and resource sector. Trewin’s new venture is Sizzle, bringing organisations together to make it easier for people to live greener lifestyles. He sits on Tetra Pak’s Global Sustainability Advisory Panel and is an advisor to the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and the National Lottery Climate Fund.


Dr Ruth Strain

Joining us in June 2024

Ruth is a fundraising professional with over a decade of experience securing gifts and building partnerships at University of Oxford colleges, the University of Edinburgh, and, most recently, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. She has served on the Board of Trustees for the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust since 2021, and in recent years volunteered on the Finance and Redevelopment Committees for the Abbey Church of Dunfermline, as well as the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s Scottish Major Donors Special Interest Group.


Andrea Westall

Joining us in 2025

Andrea is a public policy advisor, economist, and sustainability strategist. She is also a Senior Associate, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL); Trustee, Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development; and sits on a BSI Social Value panel. Previous roles include Head of People and Planet at WWF-UK; deputy and acting CEO of the New Economics Foundation, and Senior Research Fellow at the IPPR. With specialisms in sustainable and inclusive economies; health and wellbeing; alternative business models; collaborative decision-making; democratic reform; and decent work; Andrea has been a government adviser, part of many charity and social enterprise boards, and sat on national and international taskforces exploring for example, the implications of ‘sustainable wellbeing’ for the EU.
