It has been a busy first half of the year at Carnegie UK, with a lot going on across multiple strands of our programmatic work as well as various policy consultations and political developments to engage with. One of the great privileges, and challenges, of working on public policy across all parts of the UK and Ireland is that there is always something interesting and important happening somewhere.
In parallel to the work of delivery, we have also recently been building out our plans for the rest of this year. With that in mind, here are five things that you can expect to see and hear more from us on in the months ahead:
1) Life in the UK Index 2024 – Last year we launched our landmark Life in the UK Index, a project designed to measure the collective wellbeing of people in the UK. Work has now started, in partnership with Ipsos, to take the temperature of the nation’s wellbeing in 2024 – we look forward to delving into the data and sharing it with you later in the year.
2) Financing the Future – We have a kicked off a new programme of work looking at the relationship between public finances and our collective wellbeing. Keep your eyes peeled for updates as we delve deep into issues of tax, spending and creative ideas for how we fund, resource and deliver the society we want.
3) Welcoming new trustees – As we bid farewell to three esteemed trustee colleagues – Willie Campbell, Aideen McGinley and Albert Tucker – we express our gratitude for their support, challenge and wisdom over their respective terms. Following a process of open and competitive recruitment in the second half of last year, we were pleased to announce that eight new trustees will be joining our board this summer and next.
4) Bolstering our staff team – In addition to our new trustees, we are also preparing to strengthen our core Carnegie UK team. Following an internal process to identify the skills we need, we’re now searching for a new head of Head of Research and Insight. This role is pivotal to many of our ambitions for the organisation, so if you think you’ve got the right background I’d encourage you to apply.
5) General election planning – With a General Election on the horizon, Carnegie UK has started to look at how the party that wins the next vote could take action to improve the collective wellbeing of people across the country. Drawing insight from our Life in the UK index as well as our Enabling State work and our activity at a local and regional level across the UK in recent years, we’ll be making the pitch for a change of approach to governing and decision making for whoever wins the UK General election.
