Here at Carnegie UK, 2025 is shaping up to be a big year. We have a lot going on across all our programmes of work as part of our efforts to improve the wellbeing of people across the country.

Enhancing our policy team

Firstly, we are currently recruiting for two brand new, permanent research roles in our policy team. We’re looking for two senior researchers, one with a focus on mixed methods and the other with a focus on data driven insight. These roles will undertake research work across our portfolio of policy programmes. They have great terms and conditions attached to them and If you are interested in either of these positions then you can find out more here.

Tackling the crisis in democratic wellbeing

Our annual Life in the UK index highlights that it is the Democratic Wellbeing of people across the country that is the area of most urgent policy concern. In our latest phase of our Engaging Democracy programme, we will be working with partners across the UK in 2025 to understand and explore how we can better embed deliberative and participative democratic processes into our existing political institutions to help improve our democratic wellbeing. We will have lots more information coming soon in relation to this are of our work, so watch this space in the coming weeks to stay up to date with everything we have planned.

How do we finance the future we want?

Our Financing the Future programme is examining how we can better raise and spend public money to achieve long-term policy outcomes that improve people’s lives. We have recently completed work on a discussion paper looking at issues relating to our social contract, collective wellbeing and preventative spending. We will be using this to host a series of policy roundtables across the UK in the coming months.

Another important element of this work the invitation to tender we currently have live for a research partner to help us look at and assess international examples of where wellbeing budgeting has been used by governments. If this is something that you would be interested in working with us on, then please do take a look.

Stakeholder survey

Another important aspect of our work this year is that we will be working closely with our Board to refresh our organisational strategy to inform our work from 2026 onwards. This is an important moment for us to take stock of our work to date and ensure we are as focused as possible on those areas that can make the biggest difference to improving the wellbeing of people across the UK and Ireland. To help us in this we have another invitation to tender live just now looking for a market or stakeholder research organisation to help us undertake a robust survey of our key contacts, peers and partners across the UK.

Advocacy and engagement

In a break from recent years, there are currently (touch wood) no plans for any UK or Ireland elections in 2025. The UK government is settling in after a turbulent initial six months in office. The devolved nation governments are beginning to prioritise their policy focus in advance of the devolved elections in 2026 and as of this week an agreement has been reached in Ireland that paves the way for a new government to form after the elections at the end of last year.

All of this represents a significant year of opportunity for our comms and advocacy work to engage with ministers and elected officials across the jurisdictions of the UK and Ireland to advance wellbeing approaches to public policy making.
