Following a review of the methodology used in the Life in the UK technical reports, it was identified that the description of the approach used to calculate wellbeing domain scores in the 2023, 2024 and 2025 technical reports did not fully reflect the methodology used in the analysis.
The technical reports stated that missing values were handled using a listwise deletion approach when calculating domain scores. In practice, domain scores were calculated using an available-case mean approach, whereby respondents received a domain score based on all valid, non-missing responses available within that domain.
A review of the analysis code and published outputs confirmed that the published data tables and regression analyses were produced using the available-case mean methodology. As a result, this correction relates primarily to the description of the methodology in the technical reports rather than the analytical approach used to generate the published findings.
The review also identified a small number of summary statistics in the 2024 technical report that required correction to align with the methodology used in the analysis. Revised figures are provided in the accompanying addendum and the republished 2024 technical report.
The correction does not affect comparisons between survey waves, the interpretation of trends over time, or the substantive findings and conclusions presented in the main Life in the UK reports. The wellbeing scores underpinning those reports were calculated using the methodology described in the addendum.
A full explanation, including the corrected methodological description and revised statistics, is available in the addendum below.
